le zine

Our tiny corner of the lit mag world was born from an affinity for avant-garde art and early underground zines—subversive, intelligent, and vigorously imaginative. We are devoted to the spirit of that counterculture and the heart and soul of originality. We like peculiar critters who are authentically peculiar.

We support writers and artists whose aesthetic strives to create an experience. Each magazine issue is a themed collection of somewhat unusual, possibly urgent, and slightly unhinged human expressions, existing somewhere between fancy and feral or a rock and a highbrow.

We offer three general online issues a year and a special awards issue. We’d love to publish a print version like a proper zine, but while we’d wear our staple wounds and papercuts with Gen X pride like we did when we were 16, creating multiple copies for all you fine people would take for-ev-errr. Plus, trees. We speak for the trees now.

Magpie is a publication of The Howler Project, a nonprofit human arts collective creating space for connection and expression. We used to publish work under The Howler Daily, but then we took some time off, grew our nonprofit, had our midlife crises, and evolved into Magpie Zine.

le discontents

We’re a volunteer, scrappy little team of discerning discontents, mostly habitating in the Midwest, mostly all alive for the first Evil Dead. Our day jobs differ, but we gave our hearts to the arts a long time ago.
